The Connection between Not Brushing Regularly and Arthritis

These studies can be linked to the smallest of things, such as the study of your teeth. Many people ignore brushing their teeth because they are in a hurry, can't fit in it, don't remember it, or just don't feel like it. Because of this, they are at a higher risk for a long list of diseases, than those who brush on a regular basis.

Several diseases have been linked to not regularly brushing your teeth. When plaque builds up on the front of the tooth, or the enamel, the bacteria can eventually inflame the gums and cause gum disease. Gum disease affects the rest of your body, even if you cannot feel it.

Signs that you may have gum disease:

•  Gums are tender, swollen, and red
•  Gums tend to bleed
•  Pus pockets are found between the gum and teeth
•  There is a space between the teeth and gum where the gums are separating
•  Bad breath or a constant bad taste in your mouth

How Gum Disease Connects to Arthritis and other Conditions

Gum disease can lead to some serious medical conditions. Some of these conditions cannot be cured, which leave the patient to deal with a lifetime of pain or taking prescribed medication. Arthritis is one of those conditions that can come from poor oral hygiene.

•  Rheumatoid Arthritis is a condition that is incurable. It is a pain that occurs in the joints when they become inflamed and hot. Research has shown that gum disease can lead to RA, or Rheumatoid Arthritis. The connection comes from when the bacteria lets out proteins. The proteins are secreted from the gums and affect the immune system. Arthritis is kick-started through the effects of this system.
•  Because of the protein in the immune system, other conditions can occur such as Bronchitis. The thought of this connection is that the pus pockets that form around the teeth, in the gums, can be inhaled into the respiratory system. This can lead to several respiratory conditions, including Bronchitis.
•  Heart disease has been linked to gum disease in several studies. When infection occurs in your mouth, it can travel into the bloodstream, which can then make its way to your heart. The valves of the heart have seen damage when studied against gum disease.
•  Diabetes symptoms can be increased by the existence of gum disease. When the inflammation occurs in your gums, and leads to gum disease, it can create changes in the chemical makeup which produces insulin.

How to Avoid Getting Arthritis or other Conditions from Gum Disease

There are several ways to prevent gum disease, which will lower the risks of getting other diseases and conditions. The best way is to continue regularly brushing your teeth two or more times a day. You can choose to brush your teeth after each meal, or once in the morning and once at night. Never forget to brush your teeth before taking a nap or going to bed.

Changing out your toothbrush as recommended, every three to four months, is also a great way to avoid inflaming your gums or causing gum disease to occur. Other ways that you can avoid gum disease is flossing between your teeth after meals, snacks, and beverages, and scheduling regular checkups at the dentist. By visiting your dentist they can help guide you on how to properly care for your teeth at home and how to avoid inflaming your gums and leading to gum disease.
