If You're Avoiding These Foods, It May Be Time to Visit Your Dentist

Posted on 3/23/2016 by Raymond Liu
A pair of crisp apples. There are plenty of foods that we should avoid in order to protect our teeth, but what if you start to avoid them because they are difficult to eat? This could be the sign of a problem.

Popcorn
Popcorn is a delicious and healthy snack, especially when you choose air popped options that aren't loaded down with butter and salt.

However, if you notice that the husks are constantly getting stuck around your teeth - so much so that you stop eating popcorn all together - you may want to visit with your dentist. It could be a sign of gum disease. Likewise, if your jaw feels sore when you are done eating popcorn, this could be an indication of TMJ problems.

Ice Cream
Do your teeth hurt when you try to eat an ice cream cone? While ice cream is a great treat, sensitivity often has people avoiding it. There are a variety of causes to sensitivity, but gum disease and cavities are often the culprits, as both of these issues cause the roots of the teeth to become more sensitive. Metal fillings can also cause sensitivity by transmitting temperatures to the root.

Crunchy Veggies and Fruits
A healthy set of teeth should be able to handle celery, carrots, apples, and other crunchy vegetables and fruits. However, if you feel that your teeth are loose, making it difficult for you to bite down into one of these items, you could be living with gum disease. Likewise, gaps in between your teeth could cause irritation if particles are able to get stuck between them, and this condition also warrants a trip to the dentist.

Steak
Even a good steak that has had time to tenderize can be good to chew, and fibers can become wedged between your teeth. If you experience gum irritation or have a hard time chewing a steak, you should see your dentist to look for problems.

If you have any foods that have become difficult to eat, contact our office. There is no reason that you shouldn't be able to eat the foods that you enjoy.
